A Shoddy, Brief History

Shoddy Theatre is an award-winning UK touring theatre company founded in 2018 by Mitch Donaldson following his graduation from East 15 Acting School. What began as a student-devised comedy project has grown into one of the UK's most exciting independent theatre companies, creating bold, accessible and entertaining work for audiences nationwide.

Known for its distinctive blend of physical comedy, inventive storytelling and multi-rolling ensemble performance, Shoddy Theatre has built a reputation for producing theatre that is both highly skilled and joyfully chaotic. The company's breakout production, A Shoddy Detective, evolved from its original graduate show and has since enjoyed sold-out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe and Camden Fringe, extensive UK tours, and a successful transfer to London's West End. Praised by critics and audiences alike, the production established Shoddy Theatre as a leading voice in contemporary comedy theatre and demonstrated the company's ability to develop work from the fringe circuit to some of the UK's most prestigious stages. 

Alongside its flagship show, the company has continued to expand its portfolio with productions including A Shoddy Nativity and A Shoddy Christmas Carol, demonstrating a commitment to creating original work that combines broad audience appeal with theatrical innovation. In 2024, the company produced The Olive Boy, a powerful new work directed by Mitch Donaldson, which toured nationally and went on to win an Offie Award in 2025. Shoddy also produced A Brief Case of Crazy in 2025, which received an Offie Award in 2026, further cementing the company's reputation for developing ambitious and high-quality new work.

In recent years, Shoddy Theatre has grown from a small collective of emerging artists into a nationally touring company, reaching thousands of audience members across the UK. Their work has been presented at leading regional theatres and West End stages, earning numerous five-star reviews along the way and establishing Shoddy Theatre as one of the UK's most dynamic independent theatre companies.
